All The Rage: Kettlebells

So you may be wondering, what on earth is a kettlebell, and how can it help me lose weight?

Well, basically kettlebells are named for what they look like. They are free weights with a big handle on top, that basically look like an old-style kettle (the type used for cooking over a fire.) In other words, they’re a bowling ball with a handle on top.

They come in weight ranges from 3 lbs, all the way up to the super 100 pound (and up) sizes for weight lifting champs.

And they’re a great workout for plus sized people!

You don’t have to go to the gym, wear anything special, climb on any machines, or hurt your knees to use a kettlebell. In fact, it is just as simple as using a dumbbell – but twice as effective!

Try this simple move for a fast, effective kettlebell workout (with no impact on your joints!)

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, and your toes pointed outward at about 45 degrees (so your feet would make a V if they were together.)
  • Place the kettlebell between your feet, and squat (using your knees, not your back!) to grab it.
  • Stand up (lifting with your knees!) and bring the kettlebell to chest height. Now grab the sides of the handle, and lift the kettlebell over your head.
  • Bring it back to your chest, and then to the floor, reversing the exercise. Repeat as many times as you feel comfortable, to a maximum of 10 reps.

There, you’ve just completed your first kettlebell exercise!

Can Plus Sized People Do Yoga?

When you picture someone doing yoga, you might think of ultra-thin celebs, bending over and touching their toes, or carnival workers contorting in odd positions. Think yoga is just for skinny people? Think again.

The benefits of yoga go far beyond just simple weight loss. It can help you lengthen your muscles, relieve tension, gain flexibility, and even sleep better. And what could be better for an above average sized person than better sleep, less tension, and more flexibility?

There are a few simple tricks to remember, when trying yoga as a plus sized person.

First, know your limits. If something hurts, STOP doing it! Obviously your body wasn’t meant to bend in that particular way.

Second, remember that all yoga exercises can be adapted for people of all fitness levels. That is what the straps and blocks, included with many yoga kits, are for – to make it easier for you to get into position properly, without hurting yourself.

And third, remember to have fun! Practicing yoga isn’t for everyone, but if you do get involved, remember that you are mainly there to enjoy yourself. Get into a relaxed state, tune in with your body, and take it easy.

You may find you love yoga more than you thought possible!

Losing Weight Through Social Media

This is a strange concept to many, however since you are here you are probably familiar with social media and weight loss support. Leah Segedie, founder of Bookie Boo & Mamavation™ knows exactly how hard it is too lose weight. When you add motherhood and home based business it takes the challenge of weight loss to a whole new level.

This is the challenge that has fueled Mamavation™ – now four weeks into the fourth campaign of helping moms around the world lose weight through social media tools. So what is Mamavation™ you may ask:

Mamavation™ is a social experiment and weight loss campaign in social media with the goals of teaching moms healthy living lifestyle choices so they can share with their family. Mamavation™ is a two part campaign: (1) a virtual healthy living boot camp for two moms and (2) the home of the first virtual healthy living sorority in social media, the Sistahood™ .

This is a great support group for those looking to lose weight but just get stuck. Motherhood keeps your mind off of yourself. Always worrying about who needs fed, which sporting event clothes need washed for, and oh yes your little one just found your permanent marker. Being online more hours of the day then I actually sleep is the perfect reason to turn to social support.

I haven’t been comfortable going to a gym. I’m more of a living room and DVD girl. I like being able to workout while the kids run circles around me and occasionally join in with me. However, sometimes I need that extra kick in the pants. So when I see that #mamavation tag and the ladies are talking about drinking your H2O – yep! you guessed it. I get off my tushie and refill my glass of water.Mamavation

When I am feeling down and just not in the mood I can quickly send out a tweet “I need some #mamavation support help me get a workout in!” and within seconds there are moms from around the world tweeting me back with inspiration and tushie kicking boots!

This is what is great about losing weight through social media. While the weight loss is not instant the support is! I can’t afford my own fitness coach, health advisor or a therapist to help me through every step of working out (pun intended) my issues. I can follow along as the two winners of each campaign get personal meal plans, workout routines and advice on how to overcome their own brick walls and lose weight. I can then take the advice Mamavation™ has given to the official moms and work it into my own life.

We all know that the mother is the queen bee and when she is happy and healthy so is rest of the hive. If you haven’t seen it already you may have heard about #FoodRevolution. As Jamie Oliver works his way across the United States of America changing the way our children look at food – we need to be doing the same in our homes:

  • Buy local fresh produce
  • Find teaching moments daily
  • Make ‘working out’ a fun habit and not a dreaded task

Alaina Frederick is a two-time Mamavation™ finalist and currently on her own challenge of losing weight. She is the founder and ‘Chief Giggle’ of Dinker & Giggles, a natural parenting website and has writen about healthy foods you should eat and fun ways to introduce them to your children!
